Today the Valentines Park Great Crested Grebe chick was swimming far out into the lake with one parent- in fact, quite close to the opposite (North) bank.
Standing on the North bank, I was just able to see the new nest under the Alder tree, which is hidden by leaves when you are near it on the Southbank. On it I could just discern the shape of the sitting bird. This is about their fifth nest I think- counting the first one they lost to the Coots and the floating one they tried- unsuccessfully- to build on the algae...Unfortunately one won't be able to see what eggs-if any- they lay in this hidden location.
