SHORT EARED OWL

Short Eared Owl: Occasional Visitor

Short Eared Owls could turn up any time, but are most likely at dusk over Fairlop Plain in Spring or Autumn.

  • October 2nd 2010 - 1 in Wanstead Park
  • September 13th 2010 - 1 on Wanstead Flats (flushed from Long Wood)
  • March 21st 2010 - 1 at Fairlop, Painters Road
  • 22nd-24th April 2009, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 2nd-6th October 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 27th September 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 21st September 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 14th September 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 23rd April 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 7th-9th April 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 6th April 2008, 2 at Fairlop Waters
  • 21st-22nd March 2008, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 20th-29th October 2006, 1 at Fairlop Waters
  • 30th October 2004, 2 at Fairlop Waters
  • 18th October 2004, 2 at Fairlop Waters (being mobbed by a Noctule Bat)
  • 15th October 2004, 1 at Fairlop Waters


Historical Information:

  • Short Eared Owls are reported as having been present (but less than five times) at Hainault Forest pre 2003 by the late Mr. Mike Dennis
  • up to 12 Short Eared Owls were reported present during one winter in the 1990's when Fairlop Plain was being cleared and many voles were active!
