Water Rail: Winter visitor

A few Water Rails overwinter in the borough, especially in Wanstead Park, but they have also been recorded in Fairlop Waters, Roding Valley Park, Valentines Park and Hainault Forest.

Sightings:

Winter 2010/2011: 4 birds present

• Fairlop Waters: 1 (1 sighting, 26th Dec)
• Roding Valley Park: 1 (1 sighting, 20th Dec)
• Wanstead Park: 2 (12 sightings, 14th Nov-Jan)

Winter 2009/2010: 4 birds present

• Fairlop Gravel Works: 1 (1 sighting, 2nd Nov 2009)
• Fairlop Waters: 1 (2 sightings, Jan 10th-13th)
• Roding Valley Park: 1 (1 sighting, Jan 17th)
• Wanstead Park: 1 (17 sightings, Jan 8th-26th March)

Winter 2008/2009: 3 birds present

• Wanstead Park: 1 (7 sightings, 5th Jan-20th March)
• Fairlop Gravel Works: 1 (1 sighting, Jan 31st)
• Fairlop Waters: 1 (2 sightings, Jan 1st-24th)
