Great Spotted Woodpecker: Redsident Breeding
Great Spotted Woodpeckers are present in most of the parks and woodland areas in the borough. There are over 20 pairs breeding in the borough. (possibly a lot more) They are best seen in Claybury Park, Hainault Forest, Wanstead Park, Bush Wood, Knighton Wood and Reeds Forest, but are also common in smaller numbers in Valentines Park, South Park, Fairlop Waters and many other areas.
Estimated Populations (based on the peak count at each site)
- 2010: 74 birds (plus 20 visiting gardens)
Historical Information:
- In 2009, 5 pairs bred in Bush Wood
- In the 1997 edition of Dominic Mitchells 'where to watch birds in the London area' it states there were about 16 breeding pairs
