LITTLE OWL

Little Owl, Wanstead Flats - April 2009 (Paul Ferris)

Little Owl: Resident Breeding

There are a few pairs of Little Owls breeding in the Fairlop and Hainault Forest area. Also birds are regularly seen on Wanstead Flats. The elusive and nocturnal nature of this species, especially during winter makes it difficult to confirm how established the species is in the borough. Although I would estimate that there are at least 5 pairs.

Latest Sightings:

2010: 7 adult birds
  • Aldborough Hatch Equestrian Centre: 2 - breeding pair seen daily
  • Five Oaks Lane Scrubland: 1 - recorded on 5 dates
  • Hainault Forest CP: 2 - recorded once
  • Wanstead Flats: 1 - recorded on 17 dates
  • Wanstead Rugby Club: 1 - seen regularly

2009: 5 adult birds

  • Aldborough Hatch Equestrian Centre: 2 - breeding pair seen daily
  • Hainault Lodge Nature Reserve: 1 - recorded on 2 occasions
  • Wanstead Flats: 2 - (recorded on 8 occasions)
