Green Woodpeckers are common in all the parks and woodland areas in the borough. The number of breeding pairs is not known, but is likely to be above 20.
During 2010 we are taking note of the maximum number of Green Woodpeckers counted at each site to try to estimate the boroughs population.
Estimated Population: based on the peak count from each site:
- 2010: 85 birds (plus 5 visiting gardens)
- In 2009, 5 pairs bred in Bush Wood
- In 2003, a record 15 pairs were recorded breeding in Hainault Forest alone!
- In the 1997 edition of Dominic Mitchells 'where to watch birds in the London area' it states there were about 12 breeding pairs
