WANSTEAD FLATS

Wanstead Flats are found at the southernmost end of Epping Forest near Wanstead Park, comprising of several areas of woodland, three ponds/lakes, open grass and scrubland. It is well worth a visit at any time of year. There is a wealth of information available in the links below.

Resident: Common Wildfowl including a flock of 200 Canada Geese, Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Kingfisher possible, Skylark, Meadow Pipit and Reed Bunting.

Winter: Pochard, Gadwall, Shoveler, Teal, occasional rarer duck, Snipe, Woodcock, Redwing, Fieldfare, Stonechat. Gull flocks including up to 500 Common Gulls.

Passage: Common Sandpiper, Yellow Wagtail, Wheatear, Whinchat, Ring Ousel, Hobby, larger raptors possible (over) Flycatchers, Warblers.

Summer: Hobby, Hirundines, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Garden Warbler.
